Run-Flat Tyres in South Africa
Published 19 May 2026 · TyreCompare editorial · How we compare prices
What run-flats are, which BMW and Mercedes models use them, replacement costs in SA, and alternatives if you want standard tyres.
Run-flat tyres (RFT) let you drive a limited distance after a puncture, usually at reduced speed, without the tyre coming off the rim. Many BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and some other premium cars sold in South Africa ship with them because there is no spare wheel in the boot. That convenience costs money at replacement time and limits your shopping list.
How run-flats work
Reinforced sidewalls support the vehicle weight when pressure drops. You are not driving on normal rubber anymore; heat builds quickly. Handbook limits are typically 80 km/h max and 80 km distance (verify your manual). After that, replace the tyre even if it looks fine.
Replacement rules in SA
- Replace with the same run-flat specification unless the handbook explicitly allows conventional tyres.
- Reset TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring) after fitment; dashboard warning lights are common until the system is relearned.
- Expect higher unit prices and fewer budget options than standard sizes.
- Some workshops refuse to repair run-flats after a puncture; plan on replacement instead.
Switching to normal tyres
Some owners switch to conventional tyres for comfort and cost. You may need to buy a spare wheel and tyre, or carry a mobility kit. Before you switch:
- Read the owner manual and warranty terms.
- Tell your insurer if policy language mentions factory fitment.
- Keep load index and speed rating at or above placard values.
- Confirm TPMS still works with new tyres (may need reprogramming).
Compare your placard size on 205/55 R16 or your vehicle page before ordering.
Brands and where to compare
Michelin and Bridgestone supply many OEM run-flat SKUs. Continental appears on European imports. Search your size on TyreCompare and read the model name carefully: run-flat variants are not always obvious in the title.

Comfort and ride quality
Run-flats often feel firmer over potholes because sidewalls are stiffer. On Cape Town and Johannesburg urban roads, some drivers prefer conventional tyres plus a spare for ride quality alone. That is a trade-off, not a free upgrade.
